Have you ever looked in the mirror and seen a less than stellar hairline staring back at you? How easily one forgets yesterday’s stray gray hair and a month-long attempt at growing a patchy, unfulfilling beard.
Unfortunately, there often comes a day in a man’s life where his hair begins to thin. The coveted “man bun” is no longer an option, hats seem like a new, necessary wardrobe staple, and it feels like there’s just not enough pomade or gel in the world to remedy the bare look.
But a little less hair on top is perfectly common. In fact, two-thirds of men will experience hair loss by age 35 and nearly 85 percent will have significantly thinner hair by age 50.
Cue the sighs of relief.
Whether the bald look is genetic or a bold, personal style choice, for many men it’s a huge source of insecurity – especially when it comes to women and dating.
In a recent survey conducted by Superdrug Online Doctor, men and women across the U.K. and the U.S. revealed their feelings on baldness in their partners and whether or not it has an impact on their dating choices.
Good news for lads dealing with a sudden loss of hair, because here’s the bald truth: Women find the bare look attractive.
When asked about their thoughts on baldness, an overwhelming 41 percent of women in the U.K. and 54 percent of women in the U.S. said baldness is sexy in their partners. Sure, what’s in your head should always be more important than the hair on top of it, but men can take solace in the fact that ladies dig the look. In fact, 76 percent of women would date someone with severe hair loss.
As for baldness in women, it’s a whole other story. Fewer than half of men would be willing to date a lady with severely thinning locks, and only about one-third of guys think female hair loss is sexy. Clearly, women favor the bare appeal; but looks aren’t everything.
In an age overrun with Tinder love and an abundance of digital first impressions, the survey revealed another surprising finding – personality is the most important factor when dating, and appearance (hairstyle or baldness included) claimed the second-place spot. As for showing up to a first date with a winning smile and thinning hair? About 70 percent of both men and women claimed their hair loss has had zero impact on their love lives.
Both men and women experience hair loss, but there’s still a clear association between baldness and men. When asked to describe baldness, both men and women picked words like “male,” “men,” and “sexy.” But at least the results were mainly positive; fewer than 23 percent of the words used had any sort of negative connotation.
It’s hard to imagine a condition often shrouded in stigma and insecurity getting a “sexy” or “attractive” label. But there it is – the bare truth. Love runs so much deeper than our follicles, and these findings revealed that the perception of baldness isn’t all that bad. Maybe it’s time to stop fixating on the hairless dude in the mirror and embrace the new look after all.
